A home EV charger supplies controlled alternating current (AC) from your home’s electrical system to the vehicle. The vehicle’s onboard charger then converts the AC power into direct current (DC) for storage in the battery.

Compared with a standard household outlet, a dedicated AC home EV charger can typically provide faster and more convenient charging. Actual charging speed depends on the charger output, available household power, and the vehicle’s maximum AC charging rate.

Choose the connector that matches the AC charging port on your vehicle. Type 1, Type 2, GB/T, and NACS are different vehicle connector standards—they are not charging speeds or household plug types.

  • Type 1 (J1772) is a five-pin AC connector commonly found on EVs made for the North American and Japanese markets.
  • Type 2 (Mennekes) is a seven-pin AC connector widely used in Europe, the UK, and many other markets.
  • GB/T AC is used mainly on vehicles made for the Chinese market.
  • NACS (Tesla) is used by Tesla vehicles in North America and is increasingly being adopted by other vehicle brands.

Connector types can vary by vehicle model, model year, and sales region. If you are unsure about compatibility, contact QIAO with your vehicle model, model year, country, and a photo of its charging port.

A 7 kW charger is commonly used with a single-phase electrical supply and is often sufficient to replace the energy used during a typical day of driving in an overnight charging session. In many markets, charging at 11 kW or 22 kW requires a three-phase electrical supply. Available power levels and installation requirements vary by country.

Higher charger output does not always mean faster charging. The actual rate is limited by the vehicle’s onboard AC charger and the power available from your home electrical system. For example, a vehicle that accepts a maximum of 11 kW AC will charge at no more than 11 kW when connected to a 22 kW charger.

Choose a power level that matches your vehicle, home electrical supply, daily driving needs, and the amount of time your vehicle is normally parked.

Hardwired home EV chargers should be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with local electrical regulations. Plug-in models also require a properly rated outlet, circuit, wiring, grounding, and protective devices that meet the charger’s specifications and local requirements.

An electrical system or panel upgrade is not always necessary. It depends on your existing household loads, available electrical capacity, selected charging power, and local installation requirements. An electrician should perform a load assessment before installation, especially for older homes or higher-power chargers.

Yes. QIAO home EV chargers are designed for indoor and outdoor installation. Their IP66-rated enclosures provide protection against dust and strong water jets. Wall-mounted and pole-mounted options are available for different residential parking areas.

IP66 does not mean that the charger can be submerged in water. Install the unit according to the product instructions and local electrical requirements, and keep the connector and electrical connections away from locations where they could be submerged in standing water. Route the charging cable so that it is not excessively stretched, crushed, or driven over.
